Famous Coins American Gold Eagle
The United States began to issue the American Gold Eagle Coin starting in 1986. It is a coin that is offered in 1/10th , ¼, ½ and 1 oz denominations, with a face stated value of $5 dollars, $10 dollars, $25 dollars and $50 dollars.
The actual value of the coins is based on the gold in them, so their value is considerably more than the stated face value. These are coins that contain gold that must have been mined from sources in the United States, and they are an alloy with silver and copper included to produce a more wear resistant coin.
The front of the coin has a rendition of Lady Liberty and the capitol building in the background. On the back of the coin is a male eagle carrying an olive branch with a nest containing a female eagle and hatchlings.
The coins are produced at the West Point Mint at West Point, New York and carry the mint mark W beneath the date on the front side. It is a coin that is authorized by the United States Congress and backed by the US Mint for both content and weight.
This is a coin that is considered the official gold bullion coin of the United States, and is authorized under the Gold Bullion act of 1985. It was released and is one of the most popular coins for collectors among United States Coins.
For the Gold Eagle coins that were mined between 1986 and 1991 the date on them is represented by Roman Numerals. Beginning in 1992 the coins started having Arabic numbers on them for the date.
These are coins that while they can technically be used at their face value, they are worth much more than that because of the Gold bullion content in each coin.
