The General Belgrano was a warship of Argentina registry, that was involved in the Falkland Islands War with Great Britain in 1982. There was a dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, and in 1982 after attempting diplomacy, the HMS Conqueror, a British Submarine fired upon and sank the General Belgrano in the South Atlantic.
There were 300 Argentina sailors aboard the General Belgrano that died when it sank, and an additional 70 crewmembers died later from either drowning or injuries from the attack. Many people from Argentina claimed that the General Belgrano was headed away from the Falkland Islands at the time that the British Submarine attacked.
Because of this many people declared that the sinking of the General Belgrano was uncalled for, and not justified. To this day, there is a despute as to whether it is an actual justified sinking by the British forces or not. The British government maintains that the Belgrano was a threat to English and British ships in the area.
More than 60 percent of the entire casualties that resulted from the Falkland Islands War came from the sinking of the General Belgrano. In retaliation the Argentina military sank the HMS Sheffield, a United Kingdom Destroyer, and after the sinking of the HMS Sheffield and the General Belgano, there followed several weeks of war and naval fighting.
The shipwreck site of the General Belgrano has still not been positively discovered as of yet.
