Mining Industry General Overview
Mining has a long and colorful history. There were mines of flint and stone in early stone age evidence, and through the history of mankind mining has evolved into a pursue that yields a lot of the materials that we use every day.
There are mines for things to help provide energy. Coal mining deals with extracting coal from rich deposits, mostly underground in most areas in the United States. Mining for coal has been occurring in the United States since the early 1800s.
There are mines that provide us with the different metals and materials that we rely on in our daily lives. Because of these materials, we can have many of the products we enjoy each day such as cars, equipment, electronics and other materials.
In times past, the Mining Industry was one that had a lot of greed. It was ran and administered by the people that owned the mines, and there was not a lot of safety or health considerations. Diseases such as black lung were rampant, and the damage done to the environment was ignored.
In the last half of the 20th century, and the first part of this century this has largely changed. The Federal Government has passed stronger and stronger legislation to support mining safety. There are groups that are part of the federal government that inspect mines now on a regular basis.
The environmental protection agency is also on the mining industry to help put areas that have been mined back and to work to restore them partly or fully so that there are not environmental long term damage.
The mining industry is not perfect, but it has a lot more regulation and is a lot safer than it has been in times past. Since the formation of federal watchdog groups, it has become a lot safer than it has been in the past, and it will continue to improve as long as the public continues to pressure the Federal government to continue with oversight on the mining Industry.
