This 1913 five cent nickel is a rare Type One Premium Gem that is an extremely popular one-year type issue, from a limited matte proof mintage of 1,520 pieces. 1913 was the first year issue of the Buffalo Nickel. It was produced in two distinct types. This coin is the original Type 1 design, which features the buffalo standing on a raised mound. The revised Type 2 design features the buffalo standing on a line of plane. The obverse has an image of a Native American Indian. It is said that the designer James Earle Fraser used three different models (all Indian Chiefs) to create the profile. The reverse was modeled after a bison named Black Diamond, who lived in the New York Central Park Zoo. Black Diamond (1893 ? 1915) weighed 1,500 pounds and was a very popular attraction at the Zoo.
