1855-C Type II Gold Dollar
PCGS AU50In 1854, the mint changed the size and the design of the gold dollar. Today they are known as Type II gold dollars and they were struck from 1854-1856. The Type II gold dollar was minted in Charlotte for one year only. The 1855-C gold dollar is an extremely popular coin and it is sought by date and type collectors alike giving the date a solid price support and track record. Choice examples are rare and always in great demand.
Usually seen in VF and XF grades. The date becomes quite rare in AU50 or better. This date is extremely difficult and rare in AU58 and better. The highest price ever realized at public sale for a full mint-state example is $27,600 for a MS62 in January 2012. The coin offered here is PCGS example in AU50. The highest price realized at public sale for an AU50 in the past three years was $6,462 in August 2014.
