1878 GOLD $20 LIBERTY
PCGS MS63This 1878 $20 Double Eagle is almost non-existent in higher grades as is this pristine MS63. It is a classic condition rarity with nearly every known example in the circulated or lowest Mint State grades. Much of the mintage entered circulation and many others were exported for international trade purposes.
The 1878 $20 Double Eagle had a reported mintage of 543,625 at the Philadelphia Mint in 1878. Large portions of the mintage were used in international trade and were safely tucked away in European bank vaults until rediscovered in recent hoards. The 1878 is not difficult to locate in circulated grades today, and lower Mint State examples are available occasionally, but this issue is elusive at the MS63 grade level, and finer coins are very rare.
The Smithsonian National Numismatic Collection has only one is Mint State coin in just MS60. This MS63 specimen is rarely offered and would be a showpiece in any collection.
