PCGS AU58This 1853 $20 Double Eagle minted in Philadelphia, has survived over a century and a half, in About Uncirculated 58 condition. In 1853, the Philadelphia Mint struck 1,261,326 double eagles in all varieties, including the popular 1853/2 Overdate issue. In the first few years of the Gold Rush, the Philadelphia Mint received vast amounts of California Gold that was minted into over 6 million $20 Double Eagles by 1853, making this issue similar in rarity as the previous 1850 to 1852 dates.
The 1853 is easily available in the VF to XF range, higher AU grades can be hard to locate, making this AU58 issue scarce. Mint State examples are elusive and considered quite rare. Current price NGC Price Guide is $5,000.
