1872-S $20 Gold Liberty
NGC MS62The 1872-S Type II double eagle is most often seen in VF to low AU grades. It is one of the more easily found in grades below AU53, but becomes very difficult to locate in AU58 or better. In full mint-state it is quite challenging and in grades of MS62 or better it is extremely rare and falls within the condition census. This is confirmed by the fact that only nine examples grading MS62 or MS63 have sold at public auction since 1990 with some those a repeat sellers. The highest price realized for a MS63 was in February 2015 when one crossed the auction block at $25,850. Notably the highest price realized for a MS62 specimen was August 2014 ANA Sale when a specimen sold for $14,100. The current price guides are as follows; PCGS Price Guide $14,500, NGC Price Guide $16,250 and Coin World Trends $16,000.
