1871-S GOLD $20 LIBERTY
PCGS MS61San Francisco minted just under a million 1871 issues (928,000 struck), many were shipped overseas, and resurfaced only in recent years. Survivors are plentiful in Very Fine through About Uncirculated condition, but mint state coins are very rare with only around 300 known. Many of the existing mint state examples have similar characteristics which means that they may all have come from an earlier hoard. This issue is noticeably abraded and with average strike. This MS61 grade is considered extremely rare, and the finest known grade is Mint State 64.
By 1871, San Francisco had become the tenth largest city in the United States. This coin was minted when both the California Historical Society and the San Francisco Art Association was founded. This coin also evokes the epic year that the first professional baseball league was founded, and the year ''P.T.'' Barnum began the Barnum & Bailey Circus, known as ''The Greatest Show on Earth.'' It was also the year the NRA was founded, the year of the Great Chicago Fire, and the year JP Morgan began his business. Holding this 1871-S, represents a golden piece of our American history.
