1858-O $20 Gold Liberty is among early double eagles, and some of the rarest of the rare are New Orleans coins. Type-I O-Mint Double Eagles are all highly desirable and can be challenging to locate even in circulated grades, though some are far more available than others. The 1858-O ranks among the more obtainable issues, but it's still considered rare, as are all New Orleans $20 gold pieces. There are only a handful of mint state specimens known (6 or 7examples) and they are very expensive. This near-Mint twenty would serve as a perfect alternative for those unable to contend for an extremely rare Uncirculated piece within an affordable budget. The 1858-O is elusive in all grades and ranks among the rarer double eagles from the New Orleans Mint, and survivors of this 35,250-piece mintage number only 150-175 pieces in all grades due that the vast majority of examples were consumed by commercial use. The typical survivor grades EF or AU and is likely to trace its provenance to a group of circulated examples that entered numismatic channels during the 1990s.This is a visually pleasing example of a rare-date New Orleans Mint twenty from the 1850s, and a coin that is sure to excite the gold specialist. Graded and certified NGC AU 50, this 1858-O Double Eagle will be a fine addition to the finest Southern gold collection or double eagle set.
