1857-O GOLD $20 LIBERTY
NGC AU551857-O $20 Gold Liberty Type-I Double Eagle graded NGC AU55. The 1857-O $20 Double Eagle may not be as famous or as rare as the 1854-O or 1856-O, however is never-the-less very rare in AU-55 and above. This is a fascinating and historic example of this popular O-mint double eagle issue.
With San Francisco Mint operations underway in 1854, the New Orleans Mint saw a drastic decline in gold coin production. That was especially true in 1854 and 1856. In 1857 the New Orleans double eagle mintage rose sharply to 30,000. However, most of the coins were widely distributed and extensively circulated and they held little appeal for numismatists of the 19th and early 20th century. The high intrinsic value of these gold keep them moving in circulation, and out of collections at that time.
As few as 200 pieces survive today for collectors in all grades. The average 1857-O twenty seen today grades Very Fine to low-end About Uncirculated and are prized by collectors today. This is an important condition rarity and one of the tougher New Orleans Type I double eagles that is seldom offered and should not be overlooked.
