1853/'2' GOLD $20 LIBERTY
NGC AU55The 1853/'2' variety was discovered in 1959 and became popular in the 1980's. The diagonal of an underdigit 2 is prominent beneath the lower loop of the 3. This issue is considered the only overdate in the Liberty Head double eagle series. Long considered a key overdate, it is also considered a controversial variety amongst numismatists.
The Philadelphia Mint struck over 1.2 million double eagles in 1853, however there are no population records for this variety. The 1853 issue had been melted in huge quantities, which makes certified survivors very desirable. About 100 pieces were found on the shipwrecks of the S.S. Republic (1865) and the S.S. Central America (1857). The majority of examples are found in XF and AU grades. Mint State pieces are rare and are seldom seen. This 1853/'2' in AU55 is scarce and a beautiful example in mid-AU condition. 1853/'2' is a time honored variety that double eagle enthusiasts still desire. This key overdate variety has long been collected as the only overdate in the Liberty twenty series, which has increased overall market demand.
