PCGS MS 64The 1905 Philadelphia double eagle is a complete contrast from the previous years mintage of 6.2 million pieces for the 1904 issue. Whereas the 1905 issue had a mintage of only 58,919 double eagles, which earns the 1905 Philadelphia issue a reputation as one of the keys to the 20th century portion of the series. The low mintage makes the 1905 a well-known rarity among 20th century double eagle issues. At one time the date was practically unavailable in Mint State, but since then many have been repatriated from overseas holdings, bolstering the collectible numbers. Still, the vast majority of survivors fall into the AU-58 and MS-62 grade range. Uncirculated examples are occasionally available through MS62 but are scarce in MS63 and decidedly rare finer. This 1905 Choice example is among the finest pieces available, and is among the scarcer 20th century issues in the series in high grade. In fact, the issue is a major rarity above MS63 and is nearly unknown in Gem condition. This PCGS MS 64 will be a highlight in any collection.
