The Indian cent was first introduced in 1859, and replaced the Flying Eagle penny, with a design that lasted for fifty years, spanning through 1909. The Indian cent depicts an Indian princess, and a popular story about its design claims a visiting Indian chief lent the designer's daughter his headdress so she could pose as the Indian princess model. Despite being produced more than a century ago, this one-cent American penny is still very popular today. The 1874 ranks among the more collectible dates from this challenging decade in the Indian Head cent series.
