The Lafayette dollar was a silver coin issued as part of the United States' participation in the Paris World's Fair of 1900. Depicting Marquis de Lafayette with George Washington. Lafayette has a special place in the hearts of Americans for over 200 years. With the assistance of Benjamin Franklin, he secured a commission as a Major General in the Continental Army. It was the only U.S. silver dollar commemorative prior to 1983, and the first U.S. coin to depict American citizens. It features conjoined busts of Washington and Lafayette on the obverse, with Lafayette on horseback on the reverse.
