1852-O NEW ORLEANS $20 GOLD
NGC AU55This 1852-O $20 Double Eagle minted in New Orleans, has survived more than 165 years in About Uncirculated 55 condition. In 1852, the New Orleans Mint struck 190,000 double eagles making this issue the second most common O-Mint $20 gold pieces after the 1851-O. This is due to the vast amounts of gold coming out of the ground from the California Gold Rush, two years before the San Francisco Mint was established in 1854.
With approximately 900 to 1,100 survivors in all grades, most are in the VF to XF range, making this AU55 scarce, and Mint State examples are considered quite rare. The availability and affordability of 1852-O Type-I gold in AU condition makes this issue popular and in demand with mintmark type collectors with higher-grade collections. Current price guides are as follows; PCGS Price Guide $15,500 and NGC Price Guide is $17,000.
This 1852-O $20 Type-I Double Eagle is a true piece of American history with ties to the pre-Civil War South and the California Gold Rush.
