PCGS SP702016-W Standing Liberty Quarter - 100TH ANNIVERSARY - FIRST STRIKE
The 2016 Standing Liberty Quarter Centennial Gold Coin is 100 years in the making! The original Standing Liberty quarter was a 25-cent coin struck by the United States Mint from 1916 to 1930, featuring the goddess of Liberty on one the obverse, standing between two large pedestals, holding an olive branch in her right hand, and a shield in her left, and an eagle in flight on the other. This imagery depicted the United States wish for peace but readiness for the fighting if necessary. The year was 1916. World World I was raging in Europe, and the political climate in the United States was definitely guarded.
A competition was held to select the design. The artist chosen was a prominent sculptor of the day, Hermon Atkins MacNeil. The Standing Liberty Quarter cause a controversy when the MacNeil's design, is said to have been modelled by two Broadway actresses of the day, with Liberty wearing a flowing garment that slipped off her right shoulder to expose her breast. Religious leaders used words like ''obscene'' and ''filthy,'' and citizens' groups rallied for Congress to have the disgusting coin recalled and redesigned with a chainmail cover-up in 1917.
Beautifully struck in .9999 fine, 24-karat gold, this gold 2016 centennial anniversary release contains one-quarter troy ounce of 24-karat gold, symbolic of the coin's denomination, and has a business strike finish. Certified and graded a perfect PCGS SP70 with a Gold Foil ''First Strike'' label.
In 2016, the U.S. Mint marked the centenary anniversary of three numismatic icons with the release of the Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, and Walking Liberty Half Dollar Centennial Gold Coins. All three coin designs were originally introduced in 1916, but were composed of 90% silver as opposed to 24 karat pure gold. The grace and beauty of designs make them some of the most beautiful motifs ever employed on circulating coins and have been favorites with numismatists and collectors ever since the time of issue. In pure gold, they are monetary works of Numismatic Art and the most beautiful Quarter design in its long history since 1792.
