The first half dollars coined by the fledgling U.S. Mint were of the Flowing Hair design and produced in just two years, from December 1794 until the end of 1795. Then in 1796, the Draped Bust Half Dollar design took the stage. A total of just 3,918 Draped Bust Halves were produced in 1796 and 1797, with a small eagle on the reverse of the coins and either 15 or 16 stars on the obverse. Production of the coins resumed in 1801 in far greater quantities and with a new “Heraldic Eagle” reverse, and minting continued until 1803, and then again, from 1805 until 1807. A number of different die varieties exist in the series, making these coins incredibly interesting to study and collect.
